Sacred Sites

This component will take youth from the reservation to various different sacred sites in the Black Hills. We will teach youth the cultural, spiritual and historical significance of these sacred sites. The majority of youth living on the reservation have never had the opportunity to travel and learn about these sacred sites. This program will help reconnect youth to the land, strengthening their understanding of who they are and the land that they come from.

The Black Hills (He Sapa) have always been sacred to us as Lakota people. These sacred lands, in conjunction with Lakota Star Knowledge, have a direct relation to the ceremonies. It is these ceremonies and the direction that we receive from them that have helped us to survive some of the worst forms of colonization and oppression in United States history. Reconnecting to these lands and doing the ceremonies that were at one time outlawed by the US government is a form of healing and resistance. This program will include both youth and families to make four trips to the Black Hills and participate in sacred ceremonies.
