2LL allows participants to apply their knowledge to real world experiences by interning at Lakota Immersion Childcare, helping both themselves and the children become fluent in the language while making sure each child reaches their age appropriate educational milestones. These 2LL participants take classes weekly and have access to online teaching materials. We find that parents in our Lakota Immersion Childcare are interested in participating in this program.
Recently, the entire staff at Thunder Valley CDC has made a commitment to learning the Lakota language. We are piloting a teaching method with a goal of being fluent after one year of classes for five hours a week. This is a goal that is tied directly to our mission and is an important goal for our staff to strive for. If it is effective we will be able to take this teaching method to organization across the reservation.
